Orpington Club Northern Feature show results and update held on Sun 24th June 2012.
After an afternoon with Sue the Cuckoo Breeder the sunday before this show I made the rash ( and late) decision to enter some birds and drive to Sydney for the show. Having has so much fun with the rest of the Orpington crew in Canberra the Show secretarys suggestion of a meal with eveyone the night before the show made the long trip all worthwhile.
Castle Hill Showgrounds Poultry and Pigeon pavilion is set in a beautful part of the city and the showgrounds were a hive of activity all weekend - dog show, rabbit show, guinea pig show, horses on the ovals etc etc.
Thank you to the NSW Wyandotte Club for hosting the Orpington Club of Australia Northern feature show which ended up with over 160 birds on display. Of note was at least 100+ of the birds entries did not go the the Canberra Royal and that the bantam entries made up 40% of the total show entries.
Large Blacks were the most numerous colour on show but we also had for the first time in Australia Lavender Bantams wre entered as well as some excellent Large Red and Spangled bantams.
Judge Peter Nordstrom of Buff Orpington fame had a tough task ahead of him and it was decided that when the Wyandotte show Judge Guy Wailes ( who bred Orpingtons for many years) finished his other task early we thought it might help with the judging workload if Guy could look over the developmental colours, Blue and Buff bantams as well as the Pairs. It did help get us through on time and our thanks go to Guy for stepping up to the plate so well (and welcome back into Orpingtons too Guy!)
Ch Bird in show was the most magnificent Blue Ck bird of Chris Hardman. When you see the photos on the Orpington Club website you will see why. He is an absolute standout bird and was shown to perfection!!!
Res Ch Bird in Show went to the Large Black Ckl of Waninga Orpingtons which was the Ch Orpington at Canberra Royal - perhaps just proving that the Canberra result wasnt a fluke??
We also had an auction and I am pleased to report that the pair of Large Blacks ( donated by Miss AR Gibson) raised $230 and the trio of Buff Bantams ( from the Cuckoo breeder) went for $130. Both lots were subject to frenzied bidding and went to probable new members.
At the end of the show Judge Peter N noted that the winning Large Blue, Large Black, Large White, Large Cuckoo and Bantam Black were as good a birds in those colours that he had seen. He was most disappointed in the Buffs from both a colour and a type perspective- seems a common problem especially with the Ckls and cut away fronts. The other thing Peter noted was the high quality of the preparation and show training of the winning fowls. Too many were not show ready in terms of pen training etc. He noted the days of RR Brown who was the master showman and commented that when he was showing he used to spend hours training birds in a pen.
So after 22 hours in a car over two days, navigating around flooded roads and dealing with Sydney traffic it was a relief to get home last night. The birds are out on the grass today oblivious of what they have done and where they have been.
